The Beginning

Tarkarli or Tarkarli is a village in Malvan Taluka, district Sindhudurg. It is Tourist Destination in Coastal Maharashtra, an attractive beach.It is called the queen of Sindhudurgas beaches, at the confluence of the River Karli. This place has gained prominence because of its long and narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters. On a fairly clear day, one can see the bed unto a depth of 20 ft. It presents a panoramic view with tall 'Shuru' trees in the background. The wide river, the beautiful sailboats and the tiny wonderful islands hamlets situated on the riverbank, add to the picturesque beauty of Tarkarli.One can see rare geographic combination of Karli river & sea of Devbagh and With sky, sea & sand blend in a enchanting natural harmony. Gracefully cruising boates from calm and cool basin of expanded rivers and to add this beauty marvel islands on the bed.

Other attractions of the Tarkarli are the forts Sindhudurg, one of Maharashtra's more popular and important sea fort, built in the 17th century and the famous Padmagarh fort. This place fishes throughout the year, the sea during summer and winter and back-waters during the monsoon since the sea water enters this area and also due to safety reasons.All this facinates tourist making their trip to this place a rememberence.

Tarkarli is situated in Maharashtra about 6 kms. south of Malvan and 546 kms. away from Mumbai on the west coast of India. The major attraction here is the long and narrow stretch of beach, with its pristine waters. On a clear day, you can see the sea-bed through a depth of 20ft. Falling on the coast of Maharashtra, Tarkarli is bestowed with loads of natural beauty and is a wonderful confluence of greenery & awe inspiring beaches.

 Route to Reach

Tarkarli is located near city of Malvan ( 6 km from Malvan). Malvan is 546 kms. away from Mumbai and 160 kms away from Kolhapur.

By Air : Nearby airports are Mumbai, Panjim ( Goa) and Kolhapur.
By Rail : Nearest railhead is Kudal, 45 kms, on Konkan Railway.
By Road : Mumbai-Tarkarli, 546 kms. Kolhapur-Tarkarli, 160 kms. Malvan-Tarkarli, 7 kms. State Transport buses ply from Mumbai, Kolhapur, Pune to Malvan and from Malvan to Tarkarli. Rickshaws are also available from Malvan.

Time to Visit

The best season to visit Tarkarli is between December and February, when the temperatures are not too high. But Tarkali is visited by tourists throughout the year.

Sindhudurg Fort: The Sindhudurg Fort is in the middle of the sea, a ten-minute boat ride from the harbour. A one time naval base of King Shivaji, this unconquered ocean fort is a must see. The watchtowers of the Fort offer a fantastic view of the nearby fishing villages, and also of the unset.

Boat Ride and Dolphin Watch: The Backwaters- An early morning cruise along the backwaters cruise is highly recommended. The boat ride into the sea is an opportunity to experience the calming effect of the wind, waves and water. In the boat ride, one is taken to the ‘sangam’ of the Karli river and the sea. Further, about an hour into the sea is the place where dolphins can be spotted. Watching these friendly creatures at their playful best is an unforgettable sight.

Deo Bagh Beach: Situated at the confluence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea, Deo Bagh Beach is like a visit to one of the beaches shown on travel & tourism shows on television. The beach is clean, the sea, blue, the trees, green and the sand, white. The red rocks, acting as a barrier for the waves to splash against, add to the attractiveness of the place, which is a photographer’s delight. According to a legend, when there were massive floods in the area a long time ago, all islands except Deo Bagh were devastated. Thus, the name ‘Deo Bagh’ or ‘Abode of the Gods’.

Sea Gull Watch: On the way back from Deo Bagh is a small sand island, less than 300 metres in diameter. This island is resplendent with hundreds of sea gulls. It is an extraordinary sight to behold.


Be sure to carry plenty of sunblock. The sun is harsh and unrelenting. A pair of binoculars comes in handy for a little bit of bird watching.

Some of the hotels near Tarkali Beach are of the order of Maharashtra Tourist Development Corporation hotel cum lodge. Various resorts are available in Malvan as well as Tarkarli. Rosary Paradise, Manali Resort, Hotel Sagar Kinara in nearby vicnity of Tarkali are quite good to stay.
