The Beginning

Kufri is a beautiful hill station located near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. Blessed with some of the most spectacular and beautiful landscapes, natural parks, and picnic spots it is a travellers paradise with exotic natural panorama of lofty Himalayas shrouded by unmelting snows, Rivers gurgling through deep stony gorges, low rolling hills, lush green valleys, captivating mountain lakes, flower bedecked meadows, beautiful temples and monasteries steeped in time.

In summers, travellers can enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding verdant valleys while in winters the snow-capped mountains and the icy sheets make it perfect for skiing.

The Past

The region around Shimla including Kufri was once a part of the Kingdom of Nepal. This region remained obscure from the rest of the world until the British 'discovered' it in 1819. The British made Shimla their summer capital in 1864 and it remained so until 1939. As Shimla gained importance, Kufri also began to be recognized as an important place to visit near Shimla. Once just a kufer or pond, Kufri today has developed into an exotic holiday destination.

The Position

Kufri is a mini hill station located about 19 kilometres from Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. The hill resort is located in the southern part of the state, the northern region of India at an altitude of 2,510 metres above sea level amongst the foothills of the Himalayas. It is located on the national highway 22.

The Climate

The weather in Kufri is alpine. Summers (April–June) are mild while winters (November–February) are cold. It experiences south-western monsoon rains in July–September. It experiences heavy snowfall in December–January.

Sports in Kufri

A whole lot of winter sports are hosted here. The winter sports festival is held in the month of February every year. Skiing is the best adventure sport that can be enjoyed in Kufri. The Skiing season spreads between November to February and the tourist inflow is at its peak during winters. The slopes are ideal for beginners. There is a range of slopes, including a beginner's run, an advanced slope and slalom run. Himachal Tourism offers ski courses, instruction and has equipment on hire at Kufri.
Besides skiing, Kufri is also known for its good hiking and trekking trails. In summers one can do horse and yak riding on the green meadows and explore the various beautiful sights in Kufri on horseback. Enthusiastic tourists gleefully played in the snow, making snowmen and throwing snowballs at each other.  Kufri holds the National Snow Statue Competition sometime in January.

 Route to Reach

BY ROAD - Kufri is linked with Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur and major cities of India such as Amritsar, Chandigarh, Delhi and Manali by a network of well- maintained roads. Regular buses ply from Shimla, Narkanda, and Rampur to Kufri. Travellers can also hire taxis from Shimla to reach Kufri. Kufri does not have an airport or a railway station. Reaching Kufri by road is the easiest way of reaching the town.

Time to Visit

Preferable time to visit Kufri is during summers, but adventure buffs and tourists interested in skiing, and watching a fresh spell of snowfall tour Kufri in winter. The best time to tour Kufri is from April to June in summer and November to February in winter.

Excursions in Kufri

Mashru Peak: The hike up to the Mahasu Peak, the highest peak in Kufri, through woods of spruce and deodar (Himalayan cedar) can be good fun. The peak is crowned by a small temple. The Mahasu Ridge also has some food slopes for skiing.

Himalayan Nature Park: The Himalayan Nature Park, which has a collection of animals and birds, like the musk deer, ibex, ghoral (goat-like stout animal), black and brown bears and pheasants found only in Himachal Pradesh.

Indira Tourist Park: The Indira Tourist Park is near the Himalayan Nature Park and provides panoramic view of the locations in Kufri.

Fagu: This village is little ahead and is gifted with some enchanting views. Fagu, which is 6 km from Kufri, is an interesting picnic spot set amongst forests and orchards and quiet good for undertaking a short trekking tour.

Shimla: Named on goddess 'Shayamla Devi', another manifestation of Goddess Kali, Shimla is the capital city of the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is only 16 km from Kufri and attracts a number of tourists every year. Shimla offers a wholesome experience and is one of the most beautiful places and hill resort that you can visit from Kufri.

Chail: Chail is a beautiful hill station and a popular resort about 25 km from Kufri. It has the palace of the maharajas of Patiala and also the highest cricket ground in the world.

Kufri is as fresh and beautiful as a hill station should be. It is a famous honeymoon destination for newly wed couples for its beautiful environs and the cool refreshing atmosphere that pervades it. However, one must carry heavy woollens while visiting this place.
An annual winter sports festival is organised every year in the month of February in Kufri. Skiing enthusiasts and adventure seekers participate in this festival. An event that adventure lovers cannot simply afford to miss!
